Torpoint Town Councillors

Mayor Cllr Gary Davis

1-3 Buller Road, Torpoint, PL11 2LD Tel: 07815 850 641
gary.davis@torpointtowncouncil.gov.uk

Biography

I decided to stand for election as a town councillor in 2011 as I was very frustrated that the town council had no public plan or vision for Torpoint to work towards, and little proactive communication or engagement with the community; resulting in little investment or improvement for many years - I didn't have the solution but I had the drive to get a vision in place. Helping in the creation of the platform for social and economic growth in the town, I have worked and continue to deliver the vision through a revamped Library Community Hub with Heritage Centre, improved parks, a potential for a jetty on the waterfront and a redeveloped bottom end of Torpoint.

I was born and raised in Sheffield, but having lived in Cornwall for 40 years, Torpoint is definitely “home”.
My working background was in a variety of clerical and customer facing roles, alongside being the treasurer for several organisations, but since retiring I have more time to devote to council duties.
I joined the council in 2013 and have served on a number of committees and working parties and am currently the chair of the Finance and Operations committee, working alongside my fellow councillors for the good of the town.

Biography

I love Torpoint, it’s a great place to live with an amazing community. On returning to Torpoint after a period of living and working overseas for many years, I felt I had the time and enthusiasm to devote to the Council to ensure our town remained a safe and pleasant place to live. Since joining the Council in 2015 I have sat on every committee to better understand how the Council works and have enjoyed being part of the team that constantly looks forward on how we can enhance and improve our town whilst working hard to ensure we are financially responsible. I’m an advocate for all residents but think it’s really important we encourage our younger generation to have a voice and become involved in the town to protect its history whilst ensuring we can develop it to meet our future needs.

Biography

Having lived and raised my family in Torpoint over the past 34 years I felt a need several years ago to give something back to the community that I and my wife Maureen had made home. My many years working in the retail sector, helped enable me to have the emotional and empathy skills needed when having to communicate with the general public. The pinnacle of my council career to date, was the honour of town mayor for the civic years 2016-2017 and 2018-2019. This privilege bestowed upon me by my fellow councillors was one that cannot be underestimated and will stay with me for ever! My thoughts to anyone wishing to join the town council would be, everyone can contribute to a better society however small, be bold and brave.

Biography

I first came to Torpoint in 1972 when drafted as Ship’s Company to HMS Raleigh. Soon after my wife and I felt that this was a place to plant our roots – a small town with fantastic beaches and coastline nearby, the moors not so far away and a City close but far enough away to be free of any “City Life”.
With the family settled, I was often away with the Royal Navy, then offshore world-wide in the Oil and Gas Industry. My last few years of working life again consisted of a great deal of travelling but only UK wide with Leonard Cheshire Disability. This UK wide travel brought home to me how lucky we are to live in such a fantastic place as Torpoint, definitely my forever home!
I joined the council in May 2013 and have served on all committees and most working parties – I believe the more you put in the more you get out. Sometimes it is frustrating but overall I sincerely believe Torpoint is moving ahead with a great future and a great team all working together for the good of the town.

Biography

I joined the Council for two primary reasons the first is to act as an unbiased and independent ambassador for the community of the town I love and the second Is a longer term aspiration to create a centre within Torpoint to enhance greater access to high quality Arts and Culture of every speciality in the wider area of South East Cornwall and beyond.”

For the greater part of my life I have been involved with Theatre, Arts and Culture and I know through experience that those communities who have access to those disciplines thrive and grow more readily than those who don’t.

I welcome all opinions on this subject, so do share them with me. It’s the people in the community that shape the community. In my view Torpoint already has a head start and I for one celebrate it
